Need help for translation of an electrical term

Hello everyone,

I need help to understand a term related to electricity (I think).
I'm a French student and as part of my degree, I'm translating a short story.
In that short story, two characters are building a house. Here is the passage I'm not sure I understand:
"I helped him plot circuits and measured sockets against my hammer"
Does it make sense to any of you to measure sockets against your hammer?

Thanks for reading this =)

Possible that it is referring to placing your hammer head vertical on the floor with the handle up, setting your outlet box on top of it, then nailing box in place.
