Hey guys I am in a jam to finish a a house tomorrow and the builder is telling me we require smoke/carbon detectors in all locations including the bedrooms?

As far as I am aware, smoke/carbon detectors 1 on each floor in hallways between bedrooms, and the detectors inside the bedroom can be just regular smoke detectors? Anyone familiar with this

Yes in bedrooms.

Edit: Oh wait, you're specifically asking about the combo part right? THAT I'm not positive about.. far as I understood it, only 1 had to be carbon monoxide.. but all have to be battery backup. I always do combos though.. never pushed it before.

Hey frunker, Ill post up as soon as I know. Im going down to city hall they said they can give me a copy of the BC Fire Code. I usually include all detectors in my jobs, so if we can get away with just smokes ( not combo's ) in bedrooms then ill be saving myself a few hundred bucks per house. Kind of kicking myself in the but as to why I didnt check before.

So had a inspector call me back today. This is what I learned

If the house does not have natural gas and does not have an attached garage, then no carbon detectors are required. If one of the two is in the house, carbon detectors are required on floors where there is a bedroom and withhin 5m of any bedroom door. If there is a gas fireplace in the bedroom, then a carbon detector is required inside the bedroom

So theoretically a house with bedrooms all the one level could only require 1 combo unit. Many houses I do will still need 3, but that's better than all 7 being combo.

Yup a lot of houses all bedrooms are up. I wish I checked into this sooner, ive done probably 10+ houses since the new smoke detector code came out and ive put combos into the bedrooms At $50 per combo over $12 per smokey thats a big frunkkin loss :O(

Expensive lesson but far cheaper than university!

Tell your old customers there's a recall on those smoke/co units and they need to be replaced ASAP.
Swap them out with regular smokes and save the combos for future homes! :thumbup:

We were talking about this at a meeting a while back. The combos we have to install have the voice alert, the regular smokies do not, so if the combo detects carbon monoxide, should it not alert the other detectors and locations in the house, therefore needing all combo units? thoughts anyone.

I don't think so.. doing so is just going above and beyond minimum code. It's not a bad idea, but if it's not specified in code rules, then I won't be doing it.

The smokes detect smoke.. the CO's detect CO and the combos just happen to do both in one unit in the same location.
