No More Gas in N.Y. City

N.Y. Mayor, de Blasio signed a law today, requiring the phase-out of fossil fuel usage in new buildings. The law, which goes into effect this year and mandates new buildings are fully electric by 2027, made New York City the largest city and first large cold-weather city to phase out fossil fuel combustion in new construction.

The New York law came months after Seattle's city council had already unanimously approved a ban on gas appliances in new construction, which passed in June 2021.
It includes gas heat, water heaters, ranges, fireplaces, everything natural gas.

The population of NYC is 8.468 million people. The population of Buffalo is around 277,000. 48 people died in a blizzard a few weeks ago because grid substations were destroyed by mother nature. People froze to death in cars, in the streets, in their homes. Mathematically speaking, over 1,400 people would die in the same scenario if that had happened in NYC. Likely more.

And now they're putting all their eggs in one basket. Smart.

What year will NYc require all city cars to be electric?

The regulation will build upon existing regulations enacted in New York in 2012 by requiring all new sales of passenger cars, pickup trucks, and SUVs to be zero-emission by 2035.

What do they use for standby/emergency generators?
There was a thread on ET months ago about, "Battery powered generators"
I think they should shut the gas valves to the generation stations too. View attachment 172808
I do not see coal on the list. Oh that's right, China bought all the coal mines so they can burn coal to build our windmills and solar panels..

They want all the city busses to be electric by 2030. I wonder what kind of charging set up they will install. Those chargers are 480 volts and 150 amps. How many busses can they charge at once? Maybe they can install peddles at all buss seats for the passengers to peddle. Like the Flintstones.

You guys are forgetting this is for new construction. They are not forcing everyone to change over. There will still be millions a gas fed homes and businesses.
Also replacement if your old boiler or appliance breaks. By 2030

It's easier to maintain infrastructure to fewer large consumers (i.e. power plants, ships, export) than households. And we already see how easily it is to manipulate the cost of electricity in real time.

Yet. 😜
That will take a looooong time. First they will tax it so hard that homeowners will abandon it voluntarily. Then there will be a home insurance requirements that make gas less appealing. Once most households are gas-less, it's easy to phase out a minority. Yay democracy!

Fwiw, i visited family this past weekend that has NG and was shown the bill. Less than 40% of it is the actual gas cost.
