I would think re-strike time would be a major issue with any HID lighting on occupancy sensors. I have never seen HID lighting set up that way, probably for good reason.
I've worked with MH fixture layouts where there was another socket in the shroud that would turn on if the MH lights went out so if there was an accidental opening of the MH circuit a 100 watt halogen would turn on so it wasn't complete blackout. This secondary circuit had a timer in front so the halogens wouldn't turn on when the lights were shut off at the end of the day. Basically just a primitive emergency circuit

Edit: but to answer the question, no, I haven't seen it done. Occ sensors in industrial/warehousing settings are to provide another level of energy savings and metal halide fixtures by their nature aren't very energy efficient so it's a wash at best

i had a customer who had existing high bays. he wanted to have them put on motion sensors, so we did this for 2 separate suites. one of the suites works just fine as installed. the other, all the ballasts went out in a matter of months. at first, i thought i could be the switching, but then i wondered why it didn't happen to both suites. only one suite had the problem with the ballasts going out.
