Someone just called and a job I bid a while ago was resurrected but they need a price ASAP, tonight. Apparently they waited until the feeders shorted or something. I know my material cost but the time frame or labor is what I want to check on.
Six runs of 2 1/2 EMT run across 5 stores thru sheetrock ceilings and drop ceilings. Bar joist are about 15 feet above the floor. Ladders and no man lifts. The runs are between 275 feet and 375 feet for a total of 2000 feet. It has been a long time since I did something like this so I am a bit nervous. 3/0 copper will be used. I have to replace the existing because the existing is over 50 years old and has sewer water coming out the fittings in the basement. This is why we are going thru the ceiling. I ball parked 320 man-hours does this sound right to anybody?

I'm confused. If you bid it before it should just be a dollar adjustment on the hours you had on the previous bid. 320 sounds reasonable. Night and weekend job ? I wouldn't want customers getting in the way, liability issues and slowing the job down

I'm sorry. I left out that my previous bid was to run across the roof on the Arlington roof toppers. The other electrician bid running inside. They plan on doing the roof over in a couple years and we all know roofers. The last jobs I did like this I used Aluminum rigid on the roof so that is what I am more familiar with. It's been maybe 10 years since I ran inside with existing tenants. Inside I have to disrupt a liquor store, a pizza place, a Chinese take out, a nail salon, and a hair salon. They are not going to be happy. I have a habit of short changing my time.

Are there firewalls you are penetrating?

I think running across the roof would be less manhours than going through all these businesses in the ceiling.

Have you actually looked in the ceiling? Is it a straight shot through the ceiling or is there duct work and "stuff" in the way?

Both good points. I would assume you're going to have to firestop every penetration between tenants.

I wouldn't bid this without a thorough look over the ceilings no matter how much of a hurry they are in, you could take it in the shorts

I kind of know the building but do not recall what was above the ceilings. I bid the store renovations two years ago but did not get it. I think I will submit a price pending the architect 'approval and me looking at the ceilings. This would be a good job for the up coming recession. I feel they want a budget number.

That was the second option but there are 6 inch PVC down spouts for the roof drainage and a lot of gas piping, windows, and exhaust fans to go over.

Aluminum rigid is cheaper than EMT so I would like to go the roof method.

EMT you have to add for the couplings and connectors. I got a price of $100. per stick of 2 1/2 EMT and $98.00 for Aluminum.

That would be really messy to drag cable that size through 5 units.

I’m sure it would be, but I was thinking that get in and back out quick and dirty done.
I know it would be no walk in the park.

So are you going to use factory bends or are you going to bend it? I'd be using factory bends. I'd rather make the money for the labor for bending than give it to the factory, but there will be less scrap and less temptation to get artistic, less chance of things going south.

Is this mostly straight shots across the back of the stores, just under the bar joists? If so that part is pretty easy to estimate.

Depending on the construction of the demising walls between tenants, the penetrations could be easy if it's a single block, hard if it's some bunker type construction.

I would see the big unknown the last 50' of each run.

Don't forget to check current pricing on your JB's, LB's, mogul LB's, and C condulet bodies carefully.

Put an expiration date on the quote, put an escalation clause in there, etc. etc. cover every eventuality just in case.

Consider these before you rule out going around the outside - probably $1,000.00 of brackets but it could easily pay for itself, think how fast 400 feet would go... it might even simplify getting down to the panels.

Thank you. I was looking at something like that but was going to have them made . If they sell them made up that would save time. I have to check it out.
