A guy at work hired an electrician to put his old overhead service wires underground. He said he called 4 electricians, 1 called back and referred him to a different contractor (I used to work for this one) because he was too busy.
I asked him if he didn't mind telling me how much he charged, $1,400 total (customer first told me it was A LOT!)
The contractor crew got the job done in less than 6 hours (probably had 2-3 guys on site with trencher and bucket truck).

so I broke down the job and figured out what my hypothetical bid would have been. so here it is.

1. asses the job, order material, contact POCO, call in for a locate : 1 man hour
2. load materials, prepare trucks arrive onsite : 1 man hour
3. locate private utilities : 1 hour
4. dig around house : 1 hour
5. dig around pole: 1/2 hour
6. trench 110' : 1 hour
7. lay URD in trench : 1 hr
8. PVC up to meter on house : 1hr
9. PVC up pole : 1hr
10. disconnect overhead : 1/2 hr
11. remove overhead & mast from house : 1 hr
12. terminate underground at house : 1 hr
13. connect at pole : 1/2 hr
14. test everything : 1/2 hr
15. load materials : 1 hr
16. file request for inspection & send customer invoice : 1 hr

17. contractor agreed to install some kind of generator receptacle for customers furnace (free). contractor came back different day for this.

my cost, if I were a contractor:
14 man hours @ $85 = $1,200
bucket truck/lift charge : $300
trencher charge : $200
150' 4/0-4/0-2/0 AL = $500
PVC & misc. materials = $200
inspection fee : $40
total : $2,440

I showed him how I broke the price & job down, he tells me "wow, you really make me feel good about that, I thought I was getting charged a lot, now I see I got a deal"

does my bid sound accurate for a 1 man show?
any other thoughts?

$500 for the trencher, I'd call you low all around.
