I was out today fixing some frozen water pipes at an apartment building. When I was all done the tenant told me to be careful of the ice in the parking lot. I told her not to worry about it . As I was packing up the van, I stepped on a patch of ice both feet went up and I landed on my hip. The first thing I did was look around to see if anyone saw it.

About 3 years ago I fell on some ice and tore a muscle in my thigh. Involuntarily tried to do the splits going down some icy stairs. Hurt like hell and had a burning sensation but after a few minutes I was back to work.

Don't let it get you down. Today I was dropping in on a wave and my left hand slid on the rail and that microsecond of time ended up with me going straight over the falls on the takeoff and getting bounced off the reef.

I can't help it that you guys made bad choices in life. Didn't you listen to your teachers in school? They told you to study hard. I did, only I was studying weather charts, maps of coastlines, and Surfer Magazine.

Then you would be seriously mistaken. Seriously. When I lived on the Florida Gold Coast, I studied Blond. Then I moved to Hawaii and I majored in Asian Studies. I graduated with honors. Cum Laude.

My father was a world famous celestial navigator. He wrote monthly articles for boating magazines and sailing magazines on his favorite subject. Around my house growing up there was plenty of charts, maps, books on weather, books on reefs and islands, books on sailing. All sorts of goodies for me and my two older brothers who took up surfing before I did since they were "older" Thanks to Dad and boating, I was no stranger to the Caribbean growing up. I got to surf all over the place, but no place is like the north shore of Oahu for that except for Indonesia. I knew where I was going to live from the time I was in sixth grade. And the perfect weather played into that decision.

Sounds like heaven. I lived on St Thomas for a year. When I lived there with three years electrical experience I was immediately promoted to head electrician all of the USVI. Not really but I could easily made the island life choice. Work would not have been a problem. So I was a beach bum for one year. One fantastic year. I used to tip the bartender $20 and that would get a Detroit red wings game on the tv during playoffs. Hockey is not a common thing on the tv throughout the Caribbean. But basketball playoffs were on at the same time so I wasn't making many those nights. I spent a fortune on food and swill that year the red wings ended the 42 year drought.

This was off my back deck for a year. Complete with key lime tree.

My oldest brother Dave went down there for a year just before the draft got him and next thing you know he was in Phu Bai. He sailed down on a schooner with two hippies that were running guns to South America. He got a job as a bartender and surfed every chance he got. The hippies spent time in jail in Caracas cause they got caught.

The year I spent down there I was the exact age my dad spent in the jungles if Vietnam. He didn't have a good time. It was a few years after I was back in Detroit before I realized the significance of that fact.

did you injure anything other than your pride?
That's how you know when you've actually hurt yourself, when you hit the ground and say "Pride be damned, I'm gonna stay down here a minute to recover."

I have some of those metal studded grips that slip on over your boot soles. I use the hell out of them in the winter. Similar to these:
