I know what you mean.
Years ago, I had a bunch of tools stolen from my truck. I filed a police report.
Three months later, an officer knocks on my door and asks me to identifiy my tools. I go through the stuff he has with him and point out what was mine (most even had my initials on it!). Turns out, they caught the guy who broke into my truck and 46 others that night with a bunch of stolen goods in his own car.
Here's the three kickers:
1. They never charged the guy with anything. Ever.
2. Since the property was recovered, I had to reimburse my insurance company for the claim I had made.
3. I never got my stuff back. Ever. It ended up in an auction.
Is this a great country or what?
