I just got hired at a local utility as a Substation Technician Trainee. I don't start until next month and it is a union job. Does anyone have any information on what I can expect? Any substation technicians with any information on day to day life working in this field? How do you like your job as a substation technician? Any feedback is appreciated.

Never carry anything over your head. When they are adding load to a new breaker, stay in the block built substation. If you are working in a lift, keep your clearances. When wearing a raincoat, think about your loss of peripheral vision. The voltages in a substation won't hurt you. They will kill you... If you are working in a live station, never let complacency get you. Listen to your foremen when he explains things. If he explains to fast, tell him to slow down.

I'm a substation worker and my day is different every day . We maintain , test and repair all our equipment .also we do a lot of switching weather it be for another dept or could be just a feeder lock out . There is a lot of overtime which can vary between equipment failures , cable faults etc, etc. and when there are cable faults we also do the fault finding . And then there are days when your are changing ballast and bulbs and doing regular electrical work . Right now I'm actually wiring a mobile sub which is essentially a substation on a trailer ,we are temporarily feeding a bus while a new transformer is installed . I live what I do and also believe it is the best dept in theutility .

Is it safe to do this job with a titanium rod in your leg that doesnt effect your mobility? Everyone ensures me its safe, but im always asking peoples opinions
It's as safe as the person doing the work. If you're getting shocked doing control work, it's nobody's fault but your own. If you get shocked on medium or high voltage, the titanium rod won't matter because anyone would be lucky to live through it.
