We were working in a manufacturing facility today. Up in a lift. Doing some things that would probably be considered unsafe. Come to find out, the guy walking around with the manager for half the day was an OSHA inspector.

We talked yesterday about closing up a box. We exchanged pleasantries in the morning...no mention of OSHA showing up. We don't think anything will happen, but he could have told us. They had an appointment for this inspection.

FWIW, I was just at a safety training meeting yesterday and it was brought up that OSHA is not allowing 6' lanyards on boom lifts anymore, we have to use retractors from now on.

They knew about the inspection ahead of time. I would think it would have come up that OSHA was going to be there. Even if it didn't cross their mind ahead of time, someone could have whispered it to us.

Correct, as long as you are inside it and the gate / chain is closed.

MSHA? Yeah, probably.

But OSHA? I've never personally heard of pre-notification fines coming from OSHA.

When i did tower work, we had to provide it, and we where re-imbursed.

No two people like the same harnesses.

You can, and the employee allow you to buy your own PPE but they cannot make you do that.

Most companies will not allow it due to concerns of adequacy, condition etc.

...we have same policy, but someone had mentioned that a retractable is not suited for use below you head.

A retractable is supposed to be attached above your head, by attaching them to the lifts floor anchorage point, is not above your head. Next time look at the pics on the retractable, they all show pics of it being mounted above the persons head. :001_huh:

It is not a company policy, it is supposedly the new position of OSHA.

And it is only some retractors that are only good for above you.
