Has any small contractor hired from a temp agency?

Someone recently mentioned that when you do this, you don't have to worry about paying worker's comp, unemployment, etc. You just pay the temping company and write it off as a general expense.

Anyone?

I've done it twice

One experience was good, other was bad

So bad I doubt I would ever do it again
So bad that you'd like to share the story and not keep us hanging??.....

Read an old thread called "How I make money hiring Convicts and Parolees" By Big City Electrician. Great thread, I think it was Romex Racer undercover, but even if it wasn't the guy had the system down like the back of his hand.

Id be interested in how well this works out, cause paying guys under the table is for the birds.

Yup, at some point I am going to have to stop paying under the table. That's coming straight out of my profit without being about to write it off so I am paying taxes on it.

I like the idea of someone else doing the work and having the liability of paying for and withholding everything necessary. I also like the ability to not employ the men when I don't need them.

Maybe it does suck, that's why I was hoping some people with experience would chime in.

What was good and what was bad?

the good was a few years ago and started out bad

I was working an out of town lighting retrofit project and my lead I hired specifically to run the job ****ed me on the first day. Contacted a temp agency and asked for experienced guys. When they showed up neither one had ever replaced a ballast and one had almost no electrical experience.

Luckily they had brains in their head and were easily trained. Job went off without a hitch and I actually made money.

The bad was just a couple of months ago. Once again I requested experienced help. Guy they sent me was ex union with tons of experience. He was one of the worst workers I have ever seen. Next guy they sent me was even worse. Took him over 6 hours to run 2 circuits in an open stud house, then I had to pay someone to redo half of what he did.
Sent him back that afternoon and requested 2 more guys. They sent me a father and son team. These guys shared tools and the son couldn't even be left alone to make up grounds for a receptacle.

I took the son with me one day for a small job and let's just say that was the last I used him.

And from what I could gather from the temp agency, these were some of their top guys that other companies had requested in the past.

So that was a failed experiment I doubt I would repeat.

I had kicked around this idea a few times, but always opted not to partake of their services. I just can't see any type of real quality control with it. Heck, it is hard for a seasoned owner to choose the right guy, how is a temp. agency with no trade knowledge or experience supposed to get it right!

I did work with on really good guy that worked for the temp. agencies once years back. He just liked to travel all over the place. Had a JW license in like 12 different states. He grew up military and was accustomed to never being anywhere very long.
