I guys and gals I'm new to the forum and just was wondering if you could give me some insight on something. I was just curious on how long it has taken everyone to be signed up as an apprentice. I took a pre apprentiship program at the local college and honestly loved it got all a's and had such high hopes that it was the perfect job for me. I got a job right outta school and was told that after I proved myself that I would be signed as an apprentice. It's been 8 months now and I have been doing all the work a normal apprentice has and still havnt been signed. I have all my own hand and power tools but the problem is I'm starting to get discouraged a bit. I just wanna know that there is a light at the end of the tunnel I guess. Thanks for spending the time and reading my post :))))

Canada is a big place. Every province has its own set of rules.

You might want to say where you have been employed.

Edit:

You want to make sure your 8 months are documented. That's a lot of time to loose.

Sorry, I mean being signed up for an apprentiship
Welcome! Are you in Manitoba?

If you're in Manitoba, and doing electrical work without being indentured (registered with Apprenticeship Manitoba), you're employer is breaking the law. In Manitoba only a registered apprentice or journeyman may do electrical work legally. Document all your hours, and contact the Apprenticeship branch if this is the case.

Are you ******ed? Do you want him to lose his job?

OP, what your employer doing is indeed illegal, but with the way ratios are, it's standard practice. Talk to your employer about this, I'm sure he plans on registering you the second he has a spot on his ratio. Eight months isn't terrible, but I would start reminding your employer you're looking to get registered ASAP.

After 8 months, do you really think he's not being jerked (at bargain wages) around by this employer?

Ontario is bad for that, what provence are you in??
Hang in there and learn what you can.
I beleve they are only supost to kept you as a helper for three months.
What is the ratio of electrician to apprentice in the company you work for?

I have no idea what the situation is. I do however know that going to the apprenticeship board is a sure fire way to lose whatever job you do have.

Be smarter to look for another job instead.

You can be a helper indefinitely, but you aren't supposed to do any electrical work. There's no three months rule.

Hey guys, thanks for all the input. And I do live in ontario. I think a move to Calgary is def in the near future. The three to one ratio just kills it and makes it seem impossible to find something in ontario. Talking to all you guys def helps out a lot, just have been starting to feel like I'm being takin for granted and didn't think it was right but didn't know the whole protocol was for everything.

You should definitely hit the road. I have been in your exact situation and it doesn't get any better over time. Let's be real, a scumbag shop that keeps you un-indentured for 8 months probably pays its guys peanuts. That is no way to get ahead in life. You should document carefully all the time you've spent working there and start looking for jobs out west. In particular, a camp or LOA out of town job.

If you're single, save your money and don't screw around too much you can buy a new car within a year and a small condo the next year.

I was in your situation back in '09, I was doing everything expected of a first year apprentice, except I was making $5/hr less than 1st year rate and my boss kept jerking me around about getting indentured. I got out of there after five months. Luckily my current employer is crediting me for those hours. I don't understand employers not signing competent guys up after the three months, the employee pays the $35 application fee here and the employer signs the application. That's it.

You have been given a super chance. Help from dad, etc. A great province with much work. You have time (GF finishing her school) to have your hours logged properly.

Do come to Alberta with your hours officially logged. Do go to your Apprenticeship board and get stuff straightened out. Your employer should be able to handle the heat. You will be burning that bridge anyway. Worse case you can work at the car wash for a couple of weeks till the GF finishes.

Go here...

for Alberta stuff on Apprenticeship.

Electrician stuff is actually here...

Good luck. Calgary is a nice place, you can see the mountains from there and travel back in time to the badlands, an hour or so from town.

My apprenticeship started from day one. My first 40 hours were logged. Times were different back then I guess. 1968.
