My favorite service call ever was the guy who wired his whole basement in 14/3 bx. He spliced the reds together, the blacks together, and the whites together and then wondered why the breakers were always tripped. Didn't call me until after the walls were rocked. Took 2 days to figure out where it all went and make it all work. I love homeowners.

Went on a service call to a new customer. When I walked in, he proudly stated "I'm the kind of customer you hate. I do all my own work" to which I quickly responded, " No you are the kind of customer I love. I get to charge you double for fixing what you screwed up"
He laughed, admitting I was correct.
Now I do all his electrical from that time on.

Freakishly old thread

Electricians are a special breed, we (for the most part) feel no one but an electrician should do electric work. But we are expert DIYer's at everything else, having built 3 houses I can attest to this.
I don't have a problem with non electricians doing electrical, I have a problem with people that do it wrong doing it, that includes some "electricians".

All I have to say is:

Last week, 3 separate service calls.

Problem- kitchen counter plugs not working. Breakers keep tripping.

Reason- DIY husband decided to change plugs in kitchen and didn't split the plug.
I'm not a resi guy, but this is a great way to convince homeowners that they shouldn't be doing their own electrical work. As a bonus, it allows them to run two large-current-draw appliances from the same duplex receptacle. That code should never have changed to allow the 20A T-slot garbage instead, IMO.

spelling mistake or not i'm still laughing because i've been there ! Hell yeah !!!

In the U.K we have a slight upgrade from the DIY (Destroy It Yourself ) Handyman, they are called the KITCHEN FITTER !!! Man these guys can really make a fast buck ! These are the original bodge it and scarper specialists.

They go round to fit a new kitchen and do some alterations to the wiring in the kitchen then some smuck has to pick up the pieces when it all goes wrong, thats usually a guy like me :laughing::eek:
When I inspected in Camden, I refered to them as "Local Talent".
