Suffer thru this first part to get to the punch line: I did a kitchen remodel last week. At first jobwalk prior to bid I checked existing outlets - copper wire , checked to make sure there was at least two circuits feeding countertops, all ok. The panel was buried way back in a pantry shelf, so since I wasn't going to run any new circuits, I didn't bother to pull the cover off. After the general ripped out the ceiling drywall and the drywall off the walls, then the junction boxes showed up. Original wiring was Aluminum cables that someone spliced copper romex to without using at least a listed method to transition, they just used tan twisters. I take a peek at the rest of the house- all newer decora white devices. Open one or two up to check and just what I thought- not rated for CU/Al. So I ask owner when he comes home about it. He had a retired "Coast Guard" real good electrician do it all for him. He was so sure his old buddy knew what he was doing and I must have it wrong to say there were problems with the way the guy did his business. The best part- He charged $13 dollars an hour for all his work.....
