Trimmix and Chris - you will like this - if not already come across it.
Saw an add the other day. RETRAIN. BECOME AN ELECTRICIAN. OUR SPECIALLY DESIGNED CGLI COURSES WILL LEAD YOU TO A NEW CAREER.
This add was placed by Main Training PLC. The blurb given shows convincingly that taking a 5 day course for Part P together with Misc courses over a few days duration inc 17 ED. Test Inspect will qualify you to earn good wages in the Electrical Market. We are short of Electricians and this is your way in. And so on and on.
It's that magical word again. Electrician. There should be a law against using it unless you have been through a recognised apprentice program or have been graded by the JIB.
Like you lads I trained in this way;
Year 1
Year 2
Year 3 CGLI A cert
Year 4 CGLI B Cert
Year 5 CGLI Electrical Fitters
Year 6 CGLI C Full Tech
Year 7 ONC
Year 8
Year 9 HNC
Year 10 Ass'n Min'g Mech Elect Eng' s
I was not an Electrician until JIB Qualified at Year 4 plus 2 years ie 6 years.
I was not an Approved Electrician until JIB qualified at Year 4 plus 5 years ie 9 years.
I was not at Technician Grade JIB qualified until Year 6 plus 5 years ie 11 years.
Am, I moaning lads or am I just missing something.
PS. All the courses listed by Main Training are add ons for existing electricians and not a means of entry to the trade. But this is not what the training houses are telling prospective students. Give us your money and you can be anything you want to.
Maybe I am just moaning - or just missing something. But I am proud of my skills. Worked hard to get them and I don't want them undermined by someone who has nothing more than a good DIY knowledge of domestic markets . Lets hear your view. Maybe we can even take this to the JIB etc.
