There is no diagnostic manual for that unit. I would be inclined to see what the ohm reading is on 4 and 0. These are the leads to the brushes. See what you get. A really high reading, and I'd pull apart the back end to see whether the brush holder was in alignment with the slip rings or other damage. After that, condition of rotor and stator, maybe field boost.
