Home owner provided me with some Utilitech Y301ICWW can lights for installation in his basement remodel.

Are these manufactured by Halo (which is Cooper Industries) or Juno or Cooper Lighting?

The homeowner does not like the Utilitech trim options and wants to know what other brand trims would be interchangable. I like the All-Pro 6" white trims with full baffle, but not sure I should recommend those.

I just love that crap.. homeowner provides their own junk, then doesn't like it and wants us to figure out how to give them what they want after the fact.

"Make it work!"

Take a Utilitech trim to a couple supply shops and find another trim that will "work".

I'd probably tell them that since they picked the cans, they get to pick the trims. Lots of liability if the wrong trim causes a problem.

why is the homeowner dealing with an Apprentice instead of the JW?

Only 2? LUCKY!

We have 3 up here.. it's very confusing. a black one, a white one and an unmarked bare one which I have no idea what to do with.
yeah, we don't have to deal with that pesky bare wire most times in resi.

it just gets in the way

okay good so you just snip it off as well?

Figured it was just a back up wire in case you screw something up with the 2 primary wires. I do it right the first time and never mess up the black or white wires.

Doing some further investigation it looks like these may be a Cooper Industruies product because the inside of the can recommends these Utilitech trim kits:

Y704E eyeball
Y707B baffle
Y300P open trim

If you do a google search you find out that Cooper has a:

ERT704 which is an eyeball
ERT707 which is a baffle
300P Open trim

Thus with some investigative work these cans may be All-Pro’s by Cooper EI700 or the Halo H71CAT or H71CT or equivalent.

The coincidence that the model numbers are so close leads me to believe this.

no I just follow code in my area & properly tighten my fittings & I don't need that wire.

& I don't screw up those 2 wires, well 50% of the time I don't

I would have them contact the company they bought the cans from and ask them what other trim options they have. Your not profiting anything on material so why even bother trying to do all that work.
