I am an industrial electrical helper that wants to get away from the dead-end, backwoods area that I live in. I need culture. I need a vibrant place that does not solely revolve around hunting or drinking oneself into a stupor. I would like to live in a big city somewhere in the USA. And while I would generally reserve these questions for a place like City-Data, I need advice more specific to us electricians because I need a place that will readily accommodate someone in the electrical trade.

Experience: A year of industrial electrical experience at a massive chemical plant.

Education: An Associate's in Electromechanical Technology.

Certification: Level 1 NCCER. I would have more certifications, but I was jipped by a corrupt supervisor and gave up on getting more.

What big cities in the USA are perhaps the best for someone like myself? I appreciate all the advice. Thank you for your time. :)

I grew up in a small town myself. I HATED IT. They day I bought a greyhound bus ticket out of there, I never looked back.

I bounced around for a while, joined the army, bounced around some more and finally ended up where I am now. Its not a major city, but its a big enough city, its got plenty of work, and a regular ol' Joe like me can make a living and feed the kids. Thats what you want.

I would have loved to end up in Raleigh, but it just didn't turn out that way. I dont know if you've ever been to Atlanta, but its a pretty busy place as well. Good luck man, ive been in your shoes.

Living in a small town doesn't mean you have to drink or hunt. I live it just such an area. Very rural, hunting is everything. Drinking is a big problem. But I don't hunt and have been dry for 29 years. I'm satisfied in my work and the family my wife and I raised.

Somewhere close, if you are clean...drug wise. Louisville Kentucky...IBEW Local 369, 4315 Preston Highway. I believe that they are in the middle of allowing resumes but don't hold me to it. However, it is a great Local to work in . Call them.

Join the navy, request duty on an aircraft carrier, make a few deployments.
Then you'll be filled with the big city life and lots of socializing.
After your out, you'll appreciate the small town life you now hate.

If that don't fit you, Riveter has a good plan.

Don't come here.
Nothing but year round golf and fishing, pretty girls wearing skimpy clothes in 80 degree weather. It's disgusting, 8am and the bars are just closing. Just horrible.

Read craigs list, three or two of the biggest city of your choice of three or four States all west of Mississippi. Seems everyone is hiring, then you'll notice the big magnet of the great oil of the northwest... in everyone of at one State will have an add or listing...

 You sound like my army recruiter did when he was talking me into joining. He talked about chicks and beer for about an hour straight until he saw that my eyes couldn't get any bigger, and then he said "Its all yours if you join....." :jester:

Truely, I'm not trying to say the military is for any one! I grew up in one of the largest military cities on the east coast!

Not to take away anything away from anyone that considers the service, It's all of what one puts into it or what one may gain or be gained by anyone that joins! It's just not for me and I left town! I do miss the Water though!

The OP has some level of education, being around a college town is something they can relate to...

Good Luck - OP!

I just went off on my own. Nobody but me... In those days I didn't know enough about Tahiti or I woulda gone there. All I knew is that it was French speaking, so I decided on Haleiwa Hawaii instead.

Actually I think you missed my point. What I meant was you talking about chicks and college town. Hot young college girls are enough to get any young guy motivated. :)

Went there for my Honeymoon in '75. Haven't been anywhere else but a person would be hard pressed to tell me there was a better paradise.

French controlled just meant topless babes back in '75. English wasn't a problem there. Coming in from a deep sea fishing thingy... on the dock three beauties standing watching all the boats. Topless of course. Still burned into my mind.

Yeah, Tahiti... doesn't get any better I'm thinking.
