I tried asking in another thread but got no answer.

There were two of them in a small bathroom hallway in a supermarket about 7 ft. apart.
One had the cover off exposing the wires.

Are they 120v or low volt?
I dunno. I didn't touch them because I was doing a security fire survey at the time.

They look like 120V to me and they have slotted screws on the terminals and even slotted mounting screws.

I would say that it is an older style of smoke detector !

From the pic I think that it looks like an ionization chamber on one end !

At first i thought they were matrix mind wipers, one blue and one red, but then i thought of the proximity to the crappers and realized that they are poop break monitors manufactured by Cletis Industries circa 1997. The newer models are stealthier.

Look like occupancy sensors. Probably ultrasonic rather that IR.
Area they aimed at traffic paths?
Yes, but both are about 7 ft. apart pointed toward each other down the lengthwise hallway. One is in the middle of the hall and the one with the cover off is at the end. If they were occupancy sensors then one is redundant.
