The black? Just a dirty wire! Haha, I see it in attics and such, could be tar from a roof or pine tar when it was pulled through the 2x4's

Extended exposure to the heat of the attic leached the color in the plasticizer out...was the cable greasy or sticky feeling?

Might be a good idea to replace it.

clear wire

I had some wire come in on a machine from
Korea that had clear insulation on it, with just a see thru color strip on it

I have seen patches of transparent cable on some reels of residential wiring .

I assumed that it was just that the machine that colors the outer sheath ran out , or just temporarily blocked the color paint or dye .

Poor quality control on certain days !

I have also seen areas where the paint or dye has clumped .

Again poor quality control !

Maybe someone fell asleep at the controls ! :whistling2:

Monday morning or Friday afternoon ?

I'd be really impressed if it transformed itself. Can you actually find a cable type on it, and are there other patches that still have opaque insulation?

I'm betting it's like cowboy said: Some screwball cable that actually has a transparent jacket.

It was in an house built in the80's.
In an attic.... I'm going to try and talk her into replacing it!!! 2 foot on either sides can seethe original yellow jacket. I unraveled the knot it was in and at this point am assuming heat is the culprit.
