I remember looking this up for GFCIs. The conductive points were tinned to make them more weather resistant, the plastic is UV resistant, and the circuit boards have a conformal coating to help protect them from moisture.

I think in the case of GFCIs it's probably useful to ensure the long-term functionality of the device. Not sure it would matter a whole lot with a normal receptacle.
