Anyone here ever have a well off family manner continuously take advantage of your abilities and good nature for cheap electrical work ? He's a cousin in law , and a shyster an I really would like to never work for him again , but I'm trying to keep peace in the family . I need to finish a basement remodel for him , which has day dormant for over a year ! Now , he wants me there yesterday , when I'm busy with other things ? In very tempted to tell him to find someone else , but another side of me says , finish the job get paid , and let him know from now on , my prices are comparable to any other electrician in the area . I wouldn't care so much , but this guy makes a killing ! I appreciate your feedback ( I think , lol ) !

Just blow him off as long as you can.
I tell them that I will do my paying jobs first. As long as I have paying customers I will not be there for free.
If he doesn't like that give him a price to finish.

I'm very open and honest when it comes to this type of thing. I don't mind being blunt and people expect it from me.

Tell him it's not worth your time to do such a big project for little money. Tell him you have to charge a reasonable rate. Tell him you don't like working for family for this reason.

. Well , it's not for free , but it might as well be , lol ! The deal was , I take my time , don't kill myself , because he was doing all the finish work . I was ok with that , until his wife ( my cousin ) got involved and decided she needed to have her son in law ( GC ) finish the job because her husband was dragging his feet . I literally went as far as I could a year ago , now he's being a little indignant because I can't drop what in doing to go there immediately , lol ? It may end badly , because I really don't like him , and he's about to learn that ! I'll help anyone , anytime , but don't take advantage of me . That's about where I am now .

Go to his fridge, dump out his margerine onto a plate, defecate into the empty container and put the margerine back into it... it wont smell until you see it.

Figure a way to bend him over a barrel with his skills at your place and I bet he will quit calling.

I had a roofer buddy who like to take advantage of me almost constantly. Sometimes would have me swing by, get to helping him then he'd leave to go do something... say he'd be right back etc.. so I did some labor swapping till he was tired of working for me. Then I bitched about some work he did, which was actually sub-par so I was in my right. He's never asked me since. :whistling2:

he owns and runs a very successful auto repair shop , lives in a small mansion , just built a 30' x 60' pole barn ( which I wired ) , owns several boats , has a backyard to kill for ! I get no deals if I take my vehicles to him for repair either .
Grow a pair! Nobody rides for free or too cheap.

I think you have an out. One year since you been back. I would just simply say I'm not interested or tell them the new 2013 rates.

I have gone through this also. It is simple just charge them for what your time is worth. Then everybody is happy. When I need something done I have to pay or do it myself. Why should these yuppies be any different?

Cousin in law? There is no real connection to him. I dont do deals or advice to anyone that isnt immediate family. My time is worth something to me, my wife and kids.
