We all get nice bonuses at Christmas time. In turn, we all chip in usually $20 toward something for the boss. Sometimes it is gift cards, sometimes someone goes out and picks something up. But, we always do a little something each year.

Ive never gotten a gift for my boss before, even when I was a company man. But it's awkward when you get handed a check for 700 dollars and all you give them is a thank you. I think Xmas bonuses are a common expense for most companies and if the owner decides to be the kind that gives bonuses then he should have it figured in already. I really doubt any owners expect anything special from their guys but I'm not an owner.

Shake my hand and give me a sincere thanks, that is more than enough, I have had men say nothing and I mean nothing.

I had at least 5 blockbuster gift cards I threw out this year one from 1999.

Funny that you mention this. My boss and I were talking yesterday and he said that last year, a few of the guys didn't even as much as say thanks.
This was after getting a nice bonus and taking us all out to dinner.

Ive worked with guys that expect a bonus. Hell i used to be like that to but ive always appreciated it and said thanks and meant it. Now being an owner i know how much it always helped me out so i try to do the same. As long as the guys say thanks and its sincere i dont need anything else except for them to continue working, maybe cut down on the complaining though.

I'd fire any employee that gave me a gift.
Surely you jest.

As a boss, the best gift you could give me is to give the work your best and when you are off, give your family your best. A hardworking honest employee (year round) is a wonderful gift and if I share business profits with you in the form of a Christmas gift, I do not require a reciprocal gift, and like Brian said, I can buy whatever I want whenever I want so your gift is not necessary.

Enjoy your family and come back ready to roll.

One brown noser i worked with would come in early and straighten up the bosses desk and bake him cookies periodically
Like it or not, psychologist have proven that brown nosing really does work for advancement.
