Got a call to go look at an office renovation less than a mile from my house.

Walk in and they are moving walls and doors, new drywall is being installed and wires are just hanging everywhere.

Guy needs the panel box relocated because the wall its on is being removed.

Asked if he had permits for the work being performed. NOPE. Said contractor doing the work told them they didn't need any.

I asked about the other work being done and was told all he needed me for was to move the panel. They already moved some lights and fans.

Building is DIRECTLY across the street from the permitting office.

So, now, do I call the permitting office to see if they will need demo permits and engineered drawings so I can accurately price my estimate?

Or do I just say **** it cause I know they'll find someone stupid enough to take this project on without permits?

I recall roughing in a basement in a house. I got the rough done and called the inspector. He came in, looked around and said, "Yep, the electrical looks good. Now the owner needs to get permits for the framing, plumbing and mechanical........."

Just tell the cheap bastid you work above the table. If a permit / inspection is required, then you will get them. If they say not to, tell them Good-bye!.

This is a small town of around 25000 people. Town employs all code enforcement personell.
There is so much growth going on so fast they don't have the staff to keep up with it all.
The last time I applied for a hot tub permit it took over 3 weeks to get issued. We used to get them back on 2 days.

'Cept you end up pissing someone off, which costs you future work.
Your 100% right, but like I said, screw it! You gotta look out for number 1.

These GC's will drop you in a hot minute for ANYBODY who's cheaper. It serves no purpose to be loyal to the majority of them, might as well do one job and move out.

Gotta be careful in some jurisdictions here at least for residential as some have combination inspections and require multiple trades to be ready same time. Usually not an issue but sometimes there are contractors who show up to the dance with out a date.

I gotta admit I've pushed my luck way more than I should. I was putting lights on a Restaraunt one time when the inspector came by. She gave me a stop work order and told me to pull a permit. But she never got my company name or my name. I installed the lights that evening after 5 and got paid.
