You don't necessarily need the lineman school. Think about places you'd want to work, talk to the lineman IBEW locals in those locations, and talk to the power companies in those locations. The pay's very good, the work is hard, and I'd want the best possible safety, training, and insurance / benefits.

Lineman work is hard, and your always dealing with the weather. If your young (< 40 yrs), and don't ever forecast wanting a home & family, then pursuing the lineman course might be an option for you.

Remember, unless you eventually get hired by your city's local electric utility crew, you will likely be spending most of your work life in a hotel.

A spot for a local poco down the road could be good. Working in crap weather is way better than it used to be. Cloths are way better and modern trucks are fuel injected and can get in them and be sweating in 10 minutes. I have worked cold weather and its not on my list of fun things, gets old fast. While a guy might get some long hrs and even a few long cold ones its prolly made up for by sitting in the truck a good bit of the time with coffee and a sammich.
