Anyone ever use them in wood rafters? I have some conduits to move in an old warehouse and I was considering using drop in anchors and threaded rod to hang my boxes from.

The old style ones (not sammy screws) used to have a coupling welded to the screw shank. I used to just chuck that coupling right into my 1/2" cordless drill and that worked super good. The sammy screws won't fit, the hex head is too large to fit a 1/2" chuck. But there is an adaptor for them.

I don't think drop in's are a good choice for wood. Are they even listed for that application. I could just imagine the wood swelling and contracting with the change in temperatures and humidity through out the course of a year and those drop in's coming loose. I wouldn't use them.

I don't think a drop in would be a good choice for wood. Go Sammy's.

Anyone else having the same problem of getting about 1/4 of their drop in's where the insert is gone? Can't tell you how many times I've picked one up only to realize I can see clean through the thing.

Sammys are definetly the product to use. One supply house up here stocks the same thing from Powers Fasteners, I believe they're called "Vertigo". You can get them for wood, steel, or concrete, either in-line or 90-degree. Only other viable option in my book are what some people call "hangar-bolts" or "coach-screws", which have a lag thread on one end, and a machine thread on the other, and then a rod copling to join the rod, but that's another step, and more parts that can come loose.
