I went on the interview for the new residential division 2 months ago. I sat down with two guys at the hall for about ten mins. They gave me a 1 page print of a small apartment and asked me a few questions like how many conductors in this 3 way, how many conductors to the fan light combo, real basic questions. They are supposed to call me back for the "boot camp" practical portion of the interview. I have not gone yet but my buddy did it last week. He told me they put you in a 10'x10' stud framed room with a panel (installed) breakers (not installed) a roll of 12/2mc and 12/3mc some boxes and brackets etc. They provide the drill you bring the hand tools. They give you two dwgs electrical and architectural and tell you to wire up "grandmas kitchen" or whatever they call it. My buddy said there is a 3 way switch, gfci breaker, microwave ckt etc. Just make sure to check the architectural dwgs for shelf height backsplash height etc my friend said something on the architectural dwg was conflicting with one of the receptacles. This is what I've heard about the new division thats opening up (someday). I believe there is another type of boot camp for the regular local 3 guys, something about wiring up a transformer start stop switch etc but I am not sure no one I know has been to that "boot camp".

Thanks and good luck... Yeah i hear different things from different people i guess i will find out. I hear its a 3 hour test and its basic electrical theory and just basic things you would use in the field ( take up on emt, rigid, box fill) im just studying my ass off hoping for the best. Where did you take your test ?

I did the interview at the union hall on Harry van arsdale avenue out in flushing. My experience is only with this new residential division they are starting up, the one they put ads in the papers for a few months ago not the "regular" commercial/industrial section of the union. My friend said he spent from 4:30pm to 7:30pm wiring up this kitchen for them but it was all simple mechanic business.

i actually went to the bootcamp yesterday. Its wiring up a kitchen. I won't give away more info cause its not fair to the union guys who spent there time setting everything up. just be sharp and focus on your own work and trust yourself and be prepared to work. Just bring pliers strippers and a 10 in 1.they have everything laid out on a table for you.
