Reaching out on a limb for you ... but maybe call Tesla and see if that function can be switched off in the charger ?

Long shot, but worth a call, and if they can't then give them **** ;)

As far as the manufacturer's nameplate that NDC posted, it says up to 48 amps. So that's probably what I would think it needed to be wired for. AGAIN, I've not done one before, but that seems like what would be standard.
Agree with you but ....

ESA allowed it to be wired with #8 with a 32A charge rate, when the dipswitch settings were inside the charger.

Around here, most houses have 100A service, so without this provision they would have to upgrade service.
The upgrade is good $$ , but not if the other quote says he can do it on 32A and no service upgrade.

Maybe OP should be thanking Tesla for this ;)

I've never installed a Tesla charger, so I've never seen the manual.
But I doubt that they specify breaker/wire size. I'd think it would just say to follow local codes.

Question... owner gave me 6 gage romex and a 50 Amp breaker for his Gen 3 tesla charger. Going 16 feet inside wall from main outdoor panel to charger. Will this be enough gage and amps?
Generally the owner knows more about electrical, so I'd go with what he said 😂
