i recently started a new job, and today was a slow day, so i was asked to look at a generator. i was told it kept failing the gfci test, so another employee that previously looked at it, and decided to order a new gfci. today i installed the new gfci. i turned it on, and measured 120v at the recepticals. but when i tried to test the gfci, nothing happened. to test it, i push the test button, and it's suppose to trip the circuit breaker. when i push it, nothing happens... i was told this is why they ordered the replacement gfci. i thumbed through the manual, and it gave me no insight on the problem. it said call the honda dealer. can anyone shed some light on this problem for me?

the gfci is not a receptical on the generator. it's a device with 2 push buttons, a reset and a test button. the reset button stays pressed in until the test button is pressed. when you hit the test button, the reset should pop out and trip the circuit breaker. is that what everyone is picturing, or something else?

You have to think about the conditions this equipment see's on a daily basis. Rain, snow, vibration, overloads, etc. May be worth your time to pull the cover off and test the button itself if it is separate from the receptacle. I know they are separate on my little Honda.
