Metal top plates

Rule 12-516 (2) states that where nmd passes through metal studs or joist it must be protected from mechanical damage and protected by an insert where it passes through.

The carpenter at this job used metal top and bottom plates for wood construction so there's wood above or below the plates.

Do I need to weasel grommets into these metal top and bottom plates? Going to be a pain with wood directly above or below

Just finished a condo like that.
I used a hole saw and drilled a large (1.25") hole through the top plate and metal plate.
Then I used a 7/8 nailbiter, dead centre of the large hole through the plate underneath.
NMD doesn't touch the metal anywhere

I normally drill a large section of the metal top plate out with a hole saw, then drill a small hole thru the wood above it. It's protected from damage because it's held center of my hole...

This is assuming the metal top plate is mounted directly to a wooden board directly above it... Is this correct?
