So I'm reading E-Myth and I've come across the need for an organizational Chart even though I am a one man band right now.

So here is my chart so far. Tell what you think and any changes. Of course this will only apply to those that have larger companies or have aspirations for one.

On top of course is the Chief Operating Officer

Below him is the VP Operations & Facilities and VP Service and Marketing

Now under VP O&F is Office Manager, Finance Manager, and Facilities Manager

Under VP S&M is Advertising/Research/Marketing Manager, and Service & Sales Manager

Service and Sales manager is over Technicians and salespersons

Now I go a little deeper like apprentices and truck maintenance but you get the general point.

Right now, I am all positions and E-Myth says to write contracts for each position and then start hiring from the bottom up when I can.

Thoughts?

Thats a lot of work you have to do with all those positions you cover. I know. I cover the same ones and more. And sometimes I also wash dishes, mow the lawn, drive kids around, and fill out college applications for my scholars who probably won't be able to fill one out themselves till they graduate from the place........

Yes, the Primary Aim (goal) is to be at minimum a $5,000,000 company. I am setting up the business to franchise. Now that doesn't mean I actually will franchise but true growth comes from the franchise model.

When I'm at that junction, I may franchise. With my wife's career, I can see us moving in 5-7 years. I may have to sell this one as my first franchise and start another one elsewhere. Or just sell it outright.

Ditto

ditto. I do all the same. You forgot a couple.

Collections

Designer

Parts go giter

Payroll

Bidder/Estimator

Babysitter

etc....

I'm about to hire my first "Official" person next as well. It's getting too much. I was thinking like a super office manager to start. She would be all paperwork, phones, marketing/advertising, scheduling, sales, etc...Just to take off some load so I can have a life again. Let me know what you find out

The org chart is a visual, a combination snap shot of the present and a view of the projected future, going out some time into the future, that matches up with the business plan. One, two or more years ahead.

Different colors in the "chart position boxes" represent whether the position is currently filled (usually a white background), looking to fill now (usually a yellow background) and other colors of your choice to represent years out in the plan.

It's part of written business plan. In addition to helping the business owner visualize his plan it also helps new employees understand the business model and reporting structure.

If your plan is to grow beyond a one man operation then this is a must. If you want to be an absentee owner then this is the way to go. I would say replacing yourself in the field should be the first priority. Getting your tools off will give you the time to work on your business.
