What's the purpose of the wax on a masonary ring?

Total guess, but I'd guess that's for enhanced corrosion protection in the area of the box most succeptable to corrosion? Might also help to keep the crete juice from dripping out as it heats up as the crete cures, possibly keeping it out of the screw holes. I've been known to occasionally get a fingertip full of clear silicone and smear a bit in the screw holes of masonry boxes and mud rings to keep concrete, mortar, grout, or whatever out of the device mounting holes.
