Afci gone bad after backfeeding generator

Hi, I recently went through a storm and back fed a generator through a 40 amp breaker in my breaker box. After about an hour 6 of my afci breakers tripped and would not reset. Had to replace them after power came back on. Why would this happen?

So many questions, so little information. The big one is did you ground the generator prior to use? Read your operating instructions.

Sounds like you assumed everything would be OK and just ran the system.
Generators and how you connect them to a home is as different as there are stars in the sky

What is the voltage that the generator is putting out? I had heard, in the past, that some generators wouldn't run compatibility with afci unit. I have really not heard that afci needed replacing just that they would trip.

I have thought about this and

Voltage?
Grounding of the generator?
Not a true sinewave generator?
Were there any other equipment failures?
Was this a 120/240 VAC generator 3-wire with ground (4 conductors in the cable)?
Did you have a proper isolation of utility from the generator?

From an inverter manufacturer website

AC Output Side of the Inverter/Charger Using a GFCI on the AC output side of the inverter is a common practice. The brand that Xantrex has tested and uses in some models of inverters is the Pass & Seymour/Legrand. Other brands of GFCIs will usually work fine. The main things to be aware of are testing of the GFCI and what can cause nuisance tripping of the GFCI.

I did an inspection on a house where the electrician ran L1 + L2 from the transfer switch to the EM panel, and connected to the utility neutral. I tried to explain why he needed L1,L2,+N from the generator.

I told the home ownwer that would work fine unless the utility neutral opens, then it would burn up everything in his house.
"He says nope it's all been tested it all good."

About three months ago we had a huge storm and the power went out in that neighborhood, big tree, and FD got a call for heavy smoke in the house.
